Vegas Street Scenes

Walking on the street

Singing on the street

Crossing the street.

Working on the street.  For tips.

This is Paul. He lives on the streets.

Just off the street.

Ride Like a Girl

Love it when vehicles essentially become billboards.  I'm actually surprised I haven't explored this further. ->

Open 10 AM

Surfside Beach, South Carolina, is not hurting for mini-golf courses (for the record, I effing hate mini-golf.  HATE.)  I'm going to guess that there are at least 250 of them.

Ok, maybe not 250 of them.

But  a lot.  ->

Lonely Chairs

You could rent chairs (and shade) on the beach for $20 for the first day, and an additional $10 for each day afterwards. These remained unrented, and therefore unused, all day. ->

She pushed this thing up and down the beach. And up. And down. And up. And down. All day long.... ->

WSOP

For those of you who aren't poker widows wives of geeks who play poker as a serious hobby, WSOP = World Series of Poker. Yes. There is such a thing. The Geek went to Vegas last week to play in the Big Event. He didn't win the $600,000 purse (he came in third in a smaller tournament, though) but he's all set to go next year.

Me? I'm still grasping what "backraise" means in poker jargon.

Airport Wireless

Wow.  That's all blurry. It didn't look blurry on the phone at all.  Of course, when I took the picture I had been up for about 24 hours, so that may have had something to do with it.  ->

HO7

I saw these kinds of pictures quite a bit when I first arrived in Athens. They certainly appear to be acrylic on canvas and done by a local artist, which I thought was a rather lucrative setup for said artist. Nice, pretty little painted scenes of local attractions. The first shop I saw them had a few and I thought they were pretty nifty. Plus they were quite inexpensive for original art.

Then I noticed them in several shops in Athens. Then in Mykonos. And finally on Santorini. Each shop had a ton of them. I imagine they're on every island that attracts tourists. Which leads me to wonder if it's not one artist but several working in sweatshop conditions to produce the amount of work we saw in just a few days in four different cities at countless shops. Or maybe it is just one artist with OCD. Who doesn't sleep. Ever. ->

Ydor

The Europeans sure do like their bottled water. There was only a few restaraunts that served us tap water. The rest was from a bottle--tap simply wasn't an option--and we were charged for it.

As expected, I'm beginning to speak a brand new language here.

It's the language of tour guides.

My knowledge is rudimentary at this point, but I'm grasping quickly.

For instance, when the tour guide says "Now we are going to stop at a local factory so you can see how (enter your favourite tchotchke here) is made." This translates to: "Now we are going to stop at a gift shop so you can buy stuff you never knew you wanted until right now, and I can make a percentage off the sales."

Turkish Pottery

No, I didn't buy this. Yes. I bought something. Because God forbid I walk into any of these demure, quaint establishments and not support the local monopoly artisans. ->
